There are many fantastic things about New York City but my favorite thing is probably the food. And I don’t just mean the many excellent restaurants, although they are quite a treat! I also mean the excellent markets for local (and often organic) produce that you can find all over the city.What follows are seven of the best places in NYC for buying local produce.

1. Union Square Greenmarket is located on Union Square West at 15 St. to 17 St at Park South and open Monday, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 8AM and 6PM year round. The Greenmarket was founded in 1976 as a way to provide small family operated farmer’s access to the consumers in the city. The market features over a thousand varieties of fruits and vegetables, artisan cheeses, yarn, pretzels, perennials and baked goods. Many vendors accept Food Stamps and EBT cards.

2. Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket is located on Prospect Park West and Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. The Greenmarket is open year round on Saturdays from 8AM-4PM and will be closed on Christmas day. This market accepts Food Stamps and EBT cards from June until November. Founded in 1989 and is a Brooklyn haven for foodies, dog-walkers, runners and families living in the Prospect Heights, Park Slope and Crown Heights neighborhoods. The Greenmarket features eggs, produce, milk, cheese, pizza, baked goods, honey, mushrooms, maple syrup, pastries and beans.

3. Morningside Park Farmers’ Market is located on 110th St. and Manhattan Ave. and is open every Saturday from May 29th to December 18th from 9AM to 5PM. Founded in 2005 the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket you will find a range of produce, baked goods, fish, cheese and herbs.

4. Stiles Farmers Market Inc. located on 569 5th Ave. New York, NY 10036 in the Theater District, Hell’s Kitchen and Midtown West Neighborhoods in Manhattan the market is open Monday through Saturday from 9AM till 6:30PM. This market is known for its small yet exotic collection of fruits and vegetables ranging from Asian pears to fresh herbs. You will find produce staples such as lettuce, tomatoes and potatoes at discounted prices.

5. Tompkins Square Greenmarket is located on east 7th street and Ave. in Manhattan and is open year-round on Sundays from 8AM-6PM. The Tompkins Square Greenmarket accepts Food Stamps and EBT cards. The Greenmarket features fresh food and product from local farms. You will find product, fresh fruits and berries, eggs, milk, flowers, herbs, honey, cheeses and meet. They also feature cooking demonstrations.

6. Columbia Greenmarket is located on Broadway between 114th and 115th streets and is open year-round on Thursdays and Sundays from 8AM-5PM. Food Stamps and EBT cards are accepted June-November. The Columbia Greenmarket features items from local farmers such as milk, fruits, cider, baked goods, preserves, vegetables, smoked meats, cheeses and honey.

7. Bowling Green Greenmarket located on Broadway and Battery Park Place in Manhattan and open year-round on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8AM-5PM. The Bowling Green Market features fresh foods from local farmers such as spring plants, fruits, vegetables, baked breads, quiches and pot pies.
